Details of ICEGATE
To automate the process and make life easier for the end users and the officials, Customs Department has introduced the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) system, which is commonly called as ICEGATE. Here, we will show you ICE GATE full form and meaning.
What is ICEGATE?
ICEGATE full form refers to Indian Customs Electronic Commerce/ Electronic Data Interchange (EC/ EDI) Gateway. It is the interface of the Indian Customs EDI System (ICES) with the external world for sharing customs clearance related messages.
ICES handles almost 98% of India’s international trade (exports and imports) and is operational at 134 major customs locations.
How Does the Customs Department Utilise ICEGATE Project?
With the help of the ICEGATE Login facility, Customs Department offers various services such as electronic filing of the Bill of Entry (import goods declaration), shipping bills (export goods declaration) and related electronic messages between Customs and the trading partners in shipping bill status.
How can other parties utilise ICEGATE facility?
By using ICEGATE epayment facility, airlines and shipping agents can file manifests. Custodians and cargo logistics can interact with Customs EDI for cargo and logistics and related information.
Customs House Agents can avail transactional services for imports and exports. They can e-file the import and export documents, check the status of query reply and track the real-time summaries on www.icegate.gov.in.
Importers and Exporters can e-file the documentation, make the icegate e payment and check the query status and real-time tracking of icegate shipping bill status.
Through ICEGATE, data is also exchanged between Customs and various regulatory and licensing agencies such as DGFT, RBI, Ministry of Steel and DGCIS.
ICEGATE also services and supports National Import Database (NIDB) and Export Commodity Database (ECDB) for Directorate of Valuation.
What are the other additional services that ICEGATE provides?
Apart from e-filing, ICEGATE also provides the following additional services:
- E-payment
- Online registration for Intellectual Property Rights (IPR),
- Document Tracking Status at Customs EDI,
- Online Verification of DEPB/ DES/ EPCG License,
- Import Export code status,
- PAN-based CHA data, and
- Link to various other important websites or information about customs business.
Also, it provides “24x7 available” helpdesk facility to resolve the issues faced by trading partners.

A payer can e-pay for all customs locations through ICEGATE using the services of any authorised bank mentioned below –

What is the RES Software?
RES (Remote EDI System Software) that is a freeware that is created by NIC and can be downloaded using http://ices.nic.in. RES helps the user to create files that are compatible with the ICES Version 1.0/1.5 through ICEGATE.
Why is it necessary to register on ICEGATE?
Any person who wants to upload documents for the bill of entries and shipping bill cannot do it without registering on ICEGATE.

There 2 methods of uploading documents through ICEGATE:

I want to know the various types of message formats at ICEGATE?
Currently, there are two message formats at ICEGATE and they are:

Note: The user has recently migrated to ICES Version 1.5 needs to register themselves for query reply by sending a request and ICEGATE registration details to registration@icegate.gov.in.
Is it possible to use a single RES package for filling in both the versions at ICEGATE?
No, you cannot use a single RES package for filing both the versions.
What should I do if encounter any problem with RES package?
There are two possible solutions for the same
- Registering the problem at helpdesk of the ICEGATE (http://ices.nic.in/)
- Mailing to support at res@nic.in, here you need to provide a complete detail about the problem and error that you are facing at the time of using RES package along with the checklist and flat file.
What shall I do if I am not getting a query?
The query is a new functionality that is introduced in the ICES 1.5 Version for the assessing officer. In case if the user is not getting the query on he/she needs to update their ICEGATE ID by sending a mail on registration@icegate.gov.in
Do I need to use my registered mail id to file documents?
No, it is not necessary to use the registered mail ID to file the Shipping Bill/Bill of Entry. Howsoever, it shall be noted that the queries and status of his document will reflect on the users' registered mail ID.
How to check the status of the documents that I have submitted?
A user can check the status of the documents that they have submitted through logging into the ICEGATE website using their valid credentials. After logging into the system, the user needs to click on the Document Tracking System. Alternatively, the user can also call on the ICEGATE Helpdesk on 011-23379020 or 011-23370133 or can mail the same on icegatehelpdesk@icegate.gov.in.
I am stuck with RES, how can I contact the helpdesk of ICEGATE?
In case if a user is stuck somewhere they can either
- Send an e-mail on icegatehelpdesk@icegate.gov.in or
- Can call on 011-23379020 or 011-23370133
How can I add more services on already registered user ICEGATE?
In case if you want to add more services you need to send a request on registration@icegate.gov.in with all the changes that you want to add.
Is it possible to change the ICEGATE ID?
No, it is not possible to change the ICEGATE ID as it is a unique number that is allotted to every registered user.
Can I modify or update my profile at ICEGATE?
In case if you want to modify or update your profile you need to send complete details on registration@icegate.gov.in.
Is it possible to register on ICEGATE by just sending an e-mail?
No, you cannot register yourself on ICEGATE by just sending an e-mail. They need to furnish the registration form on ICEGATE that is available on www.icegate.gov.in
